I said "Please Mr. Bankman, I need 10 grand to buy me back my car I can't give you no cookie, but if you give me the cash I'll buy you the whole jar" He scratched his head, clicked his pen and looked me up and down As he called for security he leaned towards me slowly With a frown And he said, "You gotta know to understand Baby take me by my hand I'll lead you to the promised land You gotta know to understand" I was driving late at night with my best girlfriend Her name was Tracy Trump We took a left up at Norfolk and stopped the car afterI hit a bump I said "Don't cry baby, we were going so fast it Probably didn't feel one thing." As we were laying it to rest, the dog jumped up and Started to sing "You gotta know to understand Baby take me by my hand I'll lead you to the Promised Land You gotta know to understand" I went out for a walk, I was wondering why my life was Standing still I went up to see the wise man, his cave was on the top Of wise man hill When finally I got there I saw the old man, he was Standing on his head I said "tell me bout the birds and the bees and the Flowers and the trees and The moon up above and the thing called love"...he said "You gotta know to understand Baby take me by my hand I'll lead you to the Promised Land You gotta know to understand." "You gotta know to understand Baby take me by my hand I'll lead you to the Promised Land You gotta know to understand. RAWK!

Storm clouds on the rise… Temperatures goin’ down It won’t be long before it’s time… To head for higher ground Heard you coming in last night… And I wonder where you been Chills runnin’ down my spine… Feels like a cold front movin’ in Hands are startin' to quiver… Knees are startin' to quake Got a bad feelin'… That's gettin' hard to shake Nights are gettin' bitter… Since I don't remember when Chills runnin’ down my spine…Feels like a cold front movin’ in Chorus: Raindrops startin’ to fall… Wildcat startin’ to call Before long there won’t be No shelter at all I feel a change a coming’… Feel it crawling on my skin Chills runnin’ down my spine…Feels like a cold front movin’ in Feels like a cold front movin' in Won’t see no sunshine again Waves are pounding the shore Til I just can’t take it no more Thunder is a rumblin’… Skies are turning gray You know it just ain’t right… Treatin’ me this way No dinner in the oven… But an empty glass of gin Chills runnin’ down my spine…Feels like a cold front movin’ A in

I try to be a righteous man I try to give love all over the world But I'm tired of being used! It's my turn to love and be loved It's my turn to get out in the world and let my spirit speak I try to be a righteous man Talk to the Lord most every day Sometimes this world can do me wrong I keep to the path won't go astray When I start boiling over my feelings catch a flame You might be a man, stay a man, but you won't be the same If you ain't gonna do me right I might just do you in Ain't it a sin Ain't it a sin I try to find a certain style To keep my soul from runnin' wild My emotion got the best of me I kick and scream just like a child I start boiling over my feelings catch a flame I'd be a man, stay a man, but you won't be the same If you ain't gonna do me right I might just do you in Ain't it a sin Ain't it a sin Ain't it a sin When I start boiling over my feelings catch a flame I'd be a man, stay a man, but you won't be the same If you ain't gonna do me right I might just do you in Ain't it a sin Ain't it a sin Ain't it a sin So don't do me wrong And I won't do you wrong We gonna do it right Ain't it a sin

about

In early 2020, right before COVID was about to change our world, Cool Hand Juke gathered in Martin Poole's Tilted Lab studio on a Sunday afternoon for a brief recording session -- and hoping at least one tune would be good enough to share. Little did we know that this would be the last time we would play music together indoors in 2020.

The three songs on this EP were recorded in just a few hours - capturing the energy and spirit of a live Cool Hand Juke performance. Save for overdubs like harmony horn parts or handclaps/percussion, each track was recorded in a single pass. The only thing missing was you - our audience - who inspire us to dig deeper, groove harder, and spread the goodest of good vibes whenever we play.

As the year went on, CHJ did get to play together a few times (outside, socially distant and for socially-distant listeners), thankful for each moment when we could vibrate the air with that wall of sound carrying our shared joy.

in 2020, weekly video band chats were much more frequent than music gatherings, but in many ways more important during a very weird year. Pete, Art, Mark and I were already good friends, and we bonded even more deeply this year as we had more focused time to talk and share world events, inspiration, and, of course, the music of all cultures, genres and eras that help us cope.

This 3-song EP turned out beyond our wildest dreams. If not for COVID, I'm sure we would have been back in the studio for a few more winter sessions to create a full-length album. Considering what had happened since that Sunday afternoon, we feel so lucky to have gotten these three tracks down when we did. We share them with you now, and hope they bring a little fun to your day.

Many thanks to audio engineer Martin Poole for his expert ear, mad sound skills and his positive, easy-going nature.

about

Cool Hand Juke Fort Collins, Colorado

Sometimes there’s a band that’s *the* band for its time n’ place. We won’t call the Jukes heroes – ’cause what’s a hero? But if jukeboxes were still a thing, they’d be livin’ there. And though the Jukes don’t wear bathrobes to gigs, you might want a nice comfy one to slip into after a night of dancing and grooving to the rock-solid liquid-filled center of this horn-driven band! ... more
